Where to begin in the crazy journey from thinking of Guelph, Ontario as home to my current connection with our Ugandan family and moringa?! How did I go from being a mom of four in Canada to “Mamma Sharon” of hundreds in Uganda? And what does moringa powder have to do with any of this?
You probably won’t believe me, but it all started with one young man from Uganda that I met on the internet. It’s a long story so I’ll save it for over a moringa latte sometime. But what started out as a random message on Facebook that I would typically ignore, quickly blossomed into a friendship and then a family.
When my hubby Jack, and I were finally able to visit in the fall of 2019, we fell in love with the culture, the country, and the people. Africa has a way of wrapping herself around your heart and you never want let go. That young man we met on the internet is now like a son to us, and I feel like I’m Canadian on the outside and Ugandan on the inside most days!
We had been supporting this young man in his jaw-dropping attempt to get kids off the streets and into a home – his home – for a while before we visited. But looking into their eyes, holding their hands, dancing and singing, and listening to their dreams lit a fire in our souls that just won’t quit.
It’s no surprise then, that when I discovered moringa while in Uganda and tried it for myself, I knew I had struck gold. I saw results immediately (another story for another latte) and while I never thought it would turn into a business, I knew it was going to change lives.
From supplementing the diet of “our” kids who live mostly on an often unbalanced meal or two a day, to improving the overall health and wellness of friends and family at home, moringa has never failed to improve a life in one way or another. I never dreamed it would turn into a business. But when I told friends about my experience, the few packets I had brought back with me were snatched up immediately. I began ordering more and more until one day I realized that I had accidentally started a business.
But as much as I love to hear the stories of how moringa has helped my friends and family in Canada, even more exciting is that as a business, we are able to support our friends and family in Uganda as well! A percentage from each packet sold has been able to more sustainably support my friends who are doing extraordinary things to improve the quality of life for hundreds of children in Uganda.
So far we have been able to purchase bunkbeds, mattresses, and mosquito nets for kids who had been sleeping on the ground. We have raised funds for food, clothing, educational supplies, medical bills, and medications. The goal is for the schools to own land and become self-sustaining.
How great is that? That you can purchase a product that can simultaneously change your life and the life of a child thousands of miles away.
You might be nervous that you “met moringa” on the internet, but don’t worry, we met a guy on the internet once too, and now we can’t imagine our lives without him or all of “his kids” or moringa.
I love that, and I’d love for you to join us in our crazy journey to better health for ourselves and our family across the ocean.
